I have been hinting that a mega-HUGE project was coming and I am very excited to share the beginning of it all with you! I have been planning for a few months for the One Room Challenge! What is the One Room Challenge, you ask? Well, you are in for a treat!
The One Room Challenge is a six-week challenge, created by Linda from Calling it Home, to motivate home decorators and bloggers to focus on one unfinished space, put together a plan, and execute it, all while documenting it on your blog for the world to see. 20 featured bloggers will share their process each Wednesday, and the rest of us are invited to link up our own projects the following day. The inspiration and talent are insane y’all! Last April, I participated and gave Hubby a dream office makeover. This time around we will be tackling the living room situation.
Oh, where to start? I think you can say it is definitely “unfinished”. Although I am happy with most of the furnishings, the room needs to feel cozy and put together. It certainly does not right now. The large blank wall above the couch needs some artwork or hanging design. I haven’t quite decided what I want to put there yet.
We are also building a table for behind the couch on the wall and adding a second table behind the love seat that sits in the open. There is no side table or place to put a drink down near the loveseat, which is kind of a pain. An area rug will add a touch of coziness, I think.
This is where I want the room to go. This gallery wall sits on the wall opposite the fireplace or just behind and to the right of where I am standing when I took the second picture in this post.
Can I tell you one of the weirdest problems about my house? It’s the floors. Let’s call them quilt style because the floors of each room are different even though we have a pretty open floorplan. While it gives a demarcation between each functional area, you can also see 6 completely different floors from my kitchen. I can’t stand it! Like this lovely line that separates the kitchen and living area, I guess. (It’s right behind the couches pictured above. It is a very awkward situation.
And this is yet another HUGE project we will be taking on for the challenge. My entire house is furnished by the great deals I have found on craigslist and garage sales. This entertainment center is beautiful and the picture does it no justice. However, there is no centerpiece in the unit and we will be building one to match! This is going to be our biggest DIY project ever and put all of our woodworking skills to the test. I have the greatest faith that we will pull it off and it will look amazing. To avoid the pitfalls of trying to match the wood and everything, we will be painting it to many people’s chagrin. Oh, well, it is a budget thing and you are going to have to trust me on this, lol. I can’t wait to get this project started!
So that’s about it until next week. Here is a summary of the projects we will be completing over the next six weeks:
- Build and paint table for behind couch on wall
- Build media console to match entertainment center and paint/faux finish it
- Rip out disgusting flooring and install Solid Hardwood floors throughout
- New wall art and mirrors
- New rug
- New accessories and lighting
The race has begun and I am off to get started!
