Spring Alert! Can you believe that Easter is in less than two weeks? I know everyone is going crazy over finding the perfect egg craft to make this year (I am too!). I can only speak for myself and the rest of the family, but I have been missing the classic cold and creamy treats that are meant for warmer temperatures. The temperature has been creeping up this week to almost 75 and there’s a little local place in our small town that is known for its milkshakes and ice cream. Unfortunately, it’s only open May – September but I am not about to wait until then. Today, I am sharing a fast and easy recipe for Key Lime Milkshakes!
There is something very nostalgic about milkshakes for me. There was just something about eating a dessert with a straw. I can vividly remember my Dad taking us to the local “Dairy Dip” as he called it. The menu was so vast but I usually stuck to a simple chocolate malt. Boy, have the times and my tastes changed!
Now, I am not about to make a whole pie in order to make a milkshake. That would be too much work. So a store bought pie is the easy shortcut to these milkshakes. My 2 absolute favorite pies are Southern Pecan and Key Lime Pie. I definitely use quality pies like Edwards Pies. I remember a cashier once remarking to me that she was from Florida and Edwards were the only pies that accurately captured her memory of a true key lime pie. Now that is a testament that even I couldn’t provide! The graham cracker crust is my favorite part and will make you love every bite. For fruit pies, I definitely go with Mrs. Smith’s as they are a great year round pie.
This Key Lime Pie Milkshake combines all of the elements of its namesake into one indulgent yet easy to assemble dessert. Vanilla ice cream is blended with milk and Edward’s Key Lime Pie (of course) resulting in a thick, creamy milkshake. Feel free to add a bit of tequila or rum for a grown-up kick. The shake is then poured into a chilled glass and optionally garnished with fluffy whipped cream and a few a bit of the reserved golden graham crack crust. My mason jars hold about 2 cups so these are awesome to enjoy with someone special. It can easily be doubled, tripled or even quadrupled to satisfy a group and comes together in minutes — perfection! Enjoy!
Oh, but you don’t have to stop at key lime pie milkshakes, this works with many other pie flavors. How about Cookies and Creme? Or indulgent Apple Pie? Or maybe even Strawberry Creme? The options are endless but the recipe stays pretty much the same!
- 2 cups quality vanilla ice cream
- 1 cup Milk
- 1 slice good sizedof key lime pie Reserve some of the crust for garnish if desired
- Optional Garnish:
- Reserved Graham Cracker Crust
- Whipped Cream
- Place all milkshake ingredients into blender. Cover and process until smooth. Pour into glass of choice
- Top with sweetened whipped cream and a sprinkle of crust, if desired. Serve immediately.
With Easter and the first day of spring just a few weeks away, now is the time to plan for all the fun celebrations and parties. While the pies are pretty awesome on their own, the milkshakes were also a great hit with everyone!
