Today I am sharing a tutorial on how to make your own photo mat. For the mat, you can use any 8×10 paper, such as scrapbook paper, wallpaper, fabric, or the colorized map from my earlier tutorial.
You will need:
- Decorative Cover for frame (Scrapbook paper, fabric, Printable, etc)
- Double Sided tape or similar adhesive (such as glue dots)
- An 8×10 piece of thin cardboard or another photo mat
- If using a double mat such as the picture above, you will need a photo mat to fit a 4×6 photo.
How to Make a Decorative Photo Mat
First, if using a non-precut cardboard piece, cut a rectangle in the center. If you are double matting a 4×6 picture, cut a 5×7 inch rectangle. If you are only single matting, cut a rectangle to fit slightly smaller than your picture.
Next, adhere your paper to the front of your 8×10 inch mat with double-sided tape. Trim any edges on the outside of photo mat. Make two criss-cross cuts in the center (wide enough to fit scissors). As shown above, cut a diagonal criss-cross out to each corner of the photo area.
Fold back edges of paper and tape or glue dot. Trim excess. (I’m sorry that these two photos are very out of focus.)
If double matting, tape your picture to the second smaller picture mat. Then tape the second smaller mat to the 8×10 photo mat you made. Make sure the sides are even and the picture is straight.
Add to your favorite frame and now you have a unique and professional looking photo frame to display your treasured memories!
Hope you enjoyed this simple and easy tutorial!
