Today I am here with a post on how to make a colorized map photo mat. Wow, that is a tongue twister! This project is a bit different since I am not only using a map but I am altering it to match the colors of my room. I used a 4×6 photo that I double matted.
I wanted to make the photo mat special by using use a map of where my husband and I met. Of course, onlookers may not recognize that it is a map of where we met, so I guess you could fake it if you wanted.
Today I will be making a 3×3 grid map and then coloring it in.
Step 1-Find A Map
With the popularity of GPS directions and such, finding your own print map might be difficult. Certain print maps can be found easily such as Disney Parks, which would be very cute. However, if you are looking for a particular land location, you can easily find these online.
For the purpose of this tutorial, I used mapquest and put in the city that I wanted to use. I zoomed in to approximately what I wanted the map to look like. Remember that this will be a 3×3 grid. Mapquest and easy maps are set up in grids so you must click 3 consecutive grid pieces and save them to your desktop. When you have your 9 squares saved, go to step 2.
Tip: Remember that your picture will be centered so put what you would like to show up around the outsides of the square grid.
Step 2 – Make A Collage
Go to Collage PicMonkey. (Click collage on menu bar). Upload one of your grids.
You should be on photo menu–>click open photos–>upload the photos from your computer. All of your photos should be on the left hand side.
Before you drag them over, click layouts (2nd far left menu down). Now click square deal and find the 3×3 grid.
Next, click the background icon on the leftmost menu (paint pallete) and make the spacing 0.
Now go back to photo menu. Drag the pieces until you have your jigsaw complete and everything lines up.
When you are sure everything lines up, you can save it at this point or you can colorize it. (I recommend saving an extra copy as backup).
Step 3- Colorize
To edit your picture, hit “edit” at the top. Notice it says you cannot come back to the collage maker after going to the editor.
On the editor, go to the effects tab (magic wand) and click “black and white”. This will remove all color from the photo and prep it for coloring. Hit “apply”.
Now go to the lipstick menu and click “lip tint”. Choose a random color. You have to paint it on the canvas before it will show up. After you paint it on, you can play around with the color until you get it how you want it. You can play around with the tone and intensity as well.
After you are done tinting, you can also go to “exposure” under basics tool and adjust the brightness and contrast if you want.
Tip: You can also do this under tint in basics, I find that the “lip tint” option creates softer shades and you can control the tone very easily.
Step 4- Resize
Now your color picture is ready, but it is the wrong size! You will need to make it an 8×10 mat. Go to “basic edits” on the left menu, select crop. Select 8×10 and crop as you see fit. Now save and print your masterpiece! (I recommend printing on white cardstock or matte photo paper).
