Christmas is probably the most hectic time of year. Between the shopping lists and all of the activities of merry making, it can seem like a restful night’s sleep is an indulgence. Especially, if your having flooring installed right in the middle of December (Yes, we are. What were we thinking?!). Sometimes, the lull of a long winter’s nap sounds like heaven. As someone who loves a good snuggle, it isn’t surprising that I find the heavy covers of the winter bed to be the best feeling after a long day of checking off my list. Today, I am partnering with Brentwood Home to combine my design ideas with their commitment to create the most comfortable and natural sleep products to give you your best night’s sleep.
Replace Old Bedding
Much like everything in our homes, our bedding should be replaced on a schedule. Did you know that unprotected mattresses can actually double in weight after ten years due to the accumulation of millions of dust mites? Yuck. If your wondering how often items in your bedding should be replaced, here is a basic guide:
Mattress: A high-quality mattress can last up to 20 years if taken care of properly but the average of midrange brands is about 10 years. Using a cover and flipping (if appropriate) or rotating regularly can extend your mattress’s life.
Pillows: A good pillow is something we all get easily attached to. However, a pillow should really be replaced every 3-5 years and sooner if you feels lumps or if the support is just no longer there.
Comforter: This depends on how well you clean your comforter and what type you have. A quality down or feather comforter can last many years if properly maintained and allowed to air. A polyester fill will last only a few years if used daily and washed with the fill inside.A comforter, duvet cover, and even down comforter should be cleaned every few months or at least twice a year.
Protecting Your Mattress and Pillows
A good quality mattress is an expensive item, so you want to protect it from any dust, allergens, mites, and stains such as perspiration. For these same reasons, also make sure to purchase pillow covers for your pillows. Choose a cover that’s quilted or padded with feathers for added softness if you wish. Wash the cover once a month.
A Good Pillow
Speaking of pillows, a quality pillow is definitely on the list if you want a cozy, restful night’s sleep. Everyone has different requirements for pillows. I, personally, like a squishy, lightly filled pillow that can be bent and puffed to fit whatever crazy sleep position I find myself in. The Helena Kapok Latex pillow from Brentwood Home was the right pillow for me. This pillow was made for people who switch between multiple sleeping positions, because it molds to your head and neck. However, I also got to try out the Carmel Molded Latex pillow. This pillow is comprised of 100% natural latex and made for those who like firm support that molds with you. It isn’t hard although it was too firm for me. However, Hubby definitely preferred this pillow over the fluffiness of the Helena. There are 5 different types of pillows from Brentwood Home to suit every type of sleeper including the luxurious feathered gel pillow and memory foam. There are even wedges to keep your feet or head elevated for comfortable sitting. And today you can use this code OURHOME 10% Brentwood Home Coupon to recieve a discount.
Looking for the luxurious look of the beds in your favorite decor magazine? The key here is layers. Use a quality comforter with a fill rate that works for your climate. I prefer to use a comforter and duvet cover. High fill comforters will also add loft and look plush. Top it off with a quilt or coverlet for colder nights and to add some dimension and pattern to your bed.

Pillows are the final touch to create an inviting and fashionable bed. The patterns and textures and shapes of the pillows are up to you to fill your room with personality. Decorative shams are great to fill large pillows and can be changed out and cleaned easily. A simple arrangement of two square euro shams, two standard sized pillow shams, and a decorative lumbar (long rectangle) pillow are a great combination for a full or queen sized bed. If you have a king sized bed, consider three square euro shams and two king sized pillows. A few patterned or contrasting toss pillows are an easy way to infuse your personality into your space.
